Story: Joseph was born in 1982 in Macamic, Quebec. His mother Lucie, and those closest to him, remember Benoit, as he was known as to family and friends, as the kind of young man who was always ready for adventure. He enlisted in the Air Force at the age of 20 and quickly became a skilled and valued member of the Canadian Forces personnel team. To colleagues he was both personable and professional— a kind person who loved the work he did. Joseph lost his life during a training mission while serving in Egypt. The aircraft experienced a mechanical failure that resulted in a fatal crash. He was 25 years old.

Name: Edwin Erwin Phillips
Story: Edwin was born in Montreal, Quebec, on May 23, 1921. He was the son of Edwin Sr. and Rachel Phillips, who immigrated to Canada from the British West Indies. Edwin worked as a printer’s apprentice before the start of the Second World War. When the war broke out, Edwin enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force and worked as a mechanic with the No. 168 Heavy Transport Squadron, eventually rising to the rank of Sergeant. Following the end of the war in Europe, Edwin was on a humanitarian mission accompanying a delivery of penicillin to Poland when his plane crashed into a hilltop near Halle, Germany. He was just 24 years old.
